Georgia community keeps very well informed

City of Dublin adds Carousel to local access channel

You don't have to tell Felicia Aaron that there's a lot going on in her area. She knows it all by heart, from community theater to health campaigns, youth sports, United Way and college and vocational classes.

Felicia is in charge of the City of Dublin, Georgia, local access cable channel. It's a simple setup but it touches every aspect of the community's life.

People from the area's non-profit organizations, churches, school, senior center and municipal government contact her with announcements of upcoming events and concerns.

She logs on to a web page generated by the station's Carousel Solo 200, composes her message slides, and schedules them for broadcast. With the slides running 24/7, Dublin-area cable subscribers can always see what's going on.

"We go a little beyond announcements, Felicia reports. "For example, we've been running a slide a week featuring a particular volunteer from United Way or another charity. It's a nice way to recognize people who contribute to the community and to encourage others to lend a hand."

"I have thoroughly enjoyed using it, especially since it's so user friendly for me, and also because I can work right here from my desktop."


Felicia says she uses the slide templates that came with Carousel as well as custom templates she created on her own. "I'd like to do a little more with messages," she explains. Organizations with announcements often send photos or logos, and for municipal events, she can ask one of the city employees to go out and take some photos.

Though she does not consider herself tech savvy, Felicia says she had no problem learning or using the Carousel system. "I've been managing the channel for about nine years, and we installed Carousel two years ago. Our system has been beefed up several times, and this is certainly the beefiest we've owned."

"I have thoroughly enjoyed using it, especially since it's so user friendly for me, and also because I can work right here from my desktop." With older systems, Felicia had to leave her office to work in the TV room where the system was installed, but now she can access it from any computer via a web browser. "It's been a great choice, she says."

Among the bulletins the station runs regularly are announcements for Habitat for Humanity. "We'll describe what they're doing, show pictures of a house under construction, and explain the requirements for someone to become a recipient of a Habitat home."

With a population of just 16,000, the City of Dublin is not large community–yet because of the local access channel, it's very well informed.
