Planning for Digital Signage

Recently, we saw a request for proposals from a very prestigious art institute. It called for, amongst all of the other details necessary for a multimillion dollar expansion, digital signage. Someone or some group within the organization saw a need for the technology, but details did not make it to the RFP. This is very common. The need and implementation for heating, air conditioning and fire safety systems is well established, as are the various methods of implementing them. Reading those sections of an RFP results in an experienced contractor looking for the key elements and skimming the portions he's read a thousand times. We're not yet there with digital signage. Every system is new and nobody seems sure on how to plan for one. Planning for a digital signage system can mean different things to various stakeholders, but there is a process. It starts with identifying the uses for the system, the users of the system and then the audience and their environment. Once you have a clear picture of these elements, you can match the requirements to the location and size of your monitors, methods of video distribution and the abilities of your digital signage system. There are a lot of details hidden in these ideas, so let's drill down...

As a sales-bot, I love sitting in on development meetings. It’s probably my favorite activity at Tightrope. We get to talk about new features in upcoming releases and how we’re going to rule our industry with these groundbreaking ideas. TRMS Sponsors Local Twin Cities Tech Events

One of the (many!) things I enjoy about working at Tightrope is the fact that we’re located in the Twin Cities; home of the Twins, the Guthrie Theater, the Mall of America, and, although perhaps not as well known, home to an incredible technology community. I am struggling with how to sell less as more. The idea that if software is more limited than it’s competitors, that is actually more valuable. We make Carousel, a digital signage product. It has a very focused vision. We resist adding features into it because many features stray from it’s vision. However, competitors have [...]

Art from limitation: Do I really need that feature?

So I’m all like BOC over my MBA (I like my MacBook Air). The MBA has a backlit keyboard. It’s great when you are using it in dark places. Sometimes I think the keyboard should be lit up it’s not. It has a light sensor that determines when the backlight it supposed to come on. [...]

Why TRMS.COM Doesn’t Do IE 6

We launched our new web site earlier this month. Amber and JR worked like animals to do it, setting an impossibly tight deadline. In the end, they pretty much hit their target, but some things had to be dropped. The most notable amongst the casualties? Support for Internet Explorer 6. How could a company that [...]
